A single round silk fan can take 15-30 handcraft steps depending on the design. Here's exactly how they're made.
Step 1-4: The Bamboo Frame
Everything starts with the frame. Our artisans select natural bamboo harvested at 3-5 years of age — old enough for strength, young enough for flexibility. The bamboo is split, planed, and steamed to achieve the perfect arc for a round fan. Premium collections use sandalwood, rosewood, or ebony handles — each wood chosen for its grain, weight, and feel in the hand.
The frame must pass a tension test: if it warps under silk-tightening, it's rejected. Only about 70% of frames survive this gate.
Step 5-10: The Silk Surface
EastFanArt uses 100% mulberry silk — the same grade used in high-end qipao dresses and silk scarves. The silk is stretched across the bamboo frame at a precise tension: too loose and the painting bleeds, too tight and the frame bends. This tensioning alone takes years to master.
Once mounted, the silk undergoes a surface preparation: a thin alum solution is brushed on to create a painting surface that holds pigment without absorbing too deeply. This step determines whether colors stay vibrant five years from now.
Step 11-20: Hand-Painting
