A Living Tradition
Suzhou, Jiangsu province, has been the center of Chinese silk embroidery since the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). The city's artisans have passed down their craft through 32 generations. Each EastFanArt fan carries this heritage.
The Skills
- Bamboo Selection — 3-year-old bamboo, split and cured for 6 months
- Frame Bending — Steam-bent by hand into perfect circles
- Silk Stretching — Pure mulberry silk stretched to drum-tight
- Silk Thread — Each thread is 1/8 the thickness of a human hair
- Embroidery — 3-8 layers of stitching per design
- Binding — Edge-bound with silk ribbon, finishing the fan
