Silk Fan Care Basics
Chinese silk round fans are delicate handcrafted items. With proper care, they last for decades. Here's everything you need to know about maintaining your silk fans.
Daily Care
- Handle fans by the handle and outer edge — avoid touching the silk surface
- Dust with a soft, dry brush (never use water or cleaning solutions on silk)
- Keep away from direct sunlight — UV fades embroidery threads
- Avoid high humidity areas — silk is organic and can develop mold
Storage
- Store flat — never folded or compressed
- Ideal environment: 18-25°C, 40-60% humidity
- Place acid-free tissue paper between stacked fans
- Use the silk pouch provided with each fan for protection
- Rotate displayed fans every few months to prevent fading
Cleaning
Silk embroidery cannot be washed. For surface dust, use a soft brush or compressed air (low pressure). For stains, consult a professional textile conservator. Never use water, alcohol, or cleaning chemicals.
